Calgary Cancer Centre – project update

Planning work continues on schedule for the new Calgary Cancer Centre to be located on the Foothills Medical Centre site. The new facility will be built where the parking lot now sits on the northeast corner of the Foothills site (corner of 16th Ave and 29th St NW). The province announced funding for this project in March 2013.

The new facility will provide inpatients and outpatients with greater access to cancer care. The project will also incorporate research space to provide a greater opportunity for innovation, in collaboration with the University of Calgary. Alberta Infrastructure, Alberta Health and Alberta Health Services are the three main partners in the project.

The Calgary Cancer Centre project team held an information meeting on Oct. 30 to discuss progress on the Traffic Impact Assessment being conducted to fully consider all potential impacts. Representatives of surrounding communities heard a presentation and provided preliminary feedback.

As a predecessor to a larger community information evening tentatively planned for January, the project team also hosted an information meeting for community representatives on Nov. 12 to give an introduction to the overall process (future feedback meetings, scheduling, etc). Some preliminary design parameters were also presented, along with some discussion of what to expect in terms of mitigation of community concerns.

Overall in 2014 the project team has provided updates and heard feedback at a total of 20 related community meetings (South Shagannappi Area Strategic Planning Group, among others). They also meet regularly with surrounding developers and the City of Calgary to ensure a cooperative and inclusive approach to overall development issues.

January marks the beginning of a more in-depth engagement process, with a larger opportunity for more detailed feedback from residents of surrounding communities.
