University of Calgary
A new framework for communication of the University Long Range Development Plan (LRDP). The scope includes the UCalgary campus and other lands owned by the University. The consultation will include land use, how it is developed and where development will take place.
Approval of the LRDP framework is expected in June and final process approval by Fall 2016. Relocation of the Telus tower is underway and the University will close the consultation process with the Varsity residents that attended the last open house.
The University is also exploring options to relocate the weather station on the West Campus Lands to the Federal lands adjacent to the site. A portable station will be set up in the interim.
Demolition of the three Olympic-era residence housing complexes will take place near the end of May with the new Aurora student housing complex planned to be completed by the fall of 2015.
Alberta Health Services
With the reduction of Provincial funds the Calgary Cancer Project is in review and the new parking facility on the Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) site is also in review. Lot 7 (where the Cancer Centre was proposed) may be an option for the parkade.
City of Calgary Transportation
A study for the Shaganappi and 16th Avenue interchange is out for RFP (request for proposal). The Crowchild Trail study from 24th Avenue to 14th Avenue SW is set to begin with an engagement frame of reference from the impacted communities (Hounsfield Heights/Briar Hill, University Heights, West Hillhurst, Parkdale, Westmount, Sunalta, Scarboro, Shaganappi and Killarney/Richmond). The study will include the connection from Crowchild Tr to University drive. The intersection improvements on 29th street and 16th Avenue are expected to begin in 2016.
City of Calgary Transit
The North Crosstown BRT (bus rapid transit) is expected to start in 2018.
City of Calgary Planning
The Stadium Shopping Centre Development Permit (DP) submission is expected to be put forward in July and will include the full site development plan. Neil McDonald is the City Planner. The Brentwood Care Centre DP has been submitted for a 191 unit expansion. Ken Melinson is the City Planner.
The south portion of the Shaganappi Trail Corridor Study RFP has closed. Consultation will begin once the successful candidate has been selected. The Foothills Professional Building Parking Lease renewal is under way with a maximum 2 year renewal.
The Computer Modelling Group Building construction is underway (off 32 ave NW), with completion in Q3 2017.
The Westmount Charter School is connected with Vecova for the bottle recycling program and they are working with the University of Calgary for paper recycling.
The development RFQ (request for quote) is now closed and RFP is being prepared for retail design. The wildlife survey is complete with no coyote dens or deer living in the area. Door to door follow-up with residents was completed in March. New trees will be included in the landscape plan. Stripping and grading has been tendered.
The Market Mall Target Store space buyback is proceeding as is the land for Staples and Homesense located West of the main mall.
The Groves of Varsity Development is proposing a medical clinic spurring concerns buy the community over a lack of parking. The Northland mall redevelopment will leave Walmart and Best Buy intact, while the remainder will undergo a mixed use development scheme.
