Parkdale Garden Ale from our friends at Village Brewery

community ale front

Village Brewery has produced their first run of an ale that includes hops from community gardens. The Parkdale Community Garden and Gathering Space is one of a select group who are nurturing a small hop farm donated by Village Brewery and ATB Financial.

The label of the bottle reads:

COMMUNITY INVOLVED ALE

IN OUR VILLAGE THE COMMUNITY GARDEN IS THE PLACE TO GATHER, GROW AND DISCUSS MATTERS OF THE NEIGHBOURHOOD.  THIS ALE IS A NOD TO ALL THOSE GREAT CITIZENS THAT GET THEIR HANDS DIRTY AND MAKE THEIR NEIGHBOURHOOD A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE. THIS YEAR WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH HOPS FROM FOUR COMMUNITY ASSOCIATIONS – BRIDGELAND-RIVERSIDE, KILLARYNEY-GLENGARRY, INGLEWOOD AND PARKDALE AS WELL AS THE BACK YARDS OF MANY GREAT CALGARIANS THAT ENJOY BEING PART OF A COLLECTIVE COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE. THIS YEAR WE HAVE INCLUDED HONEY FROM OUR FRIENDS AT APIARIES & BEES FOR COMMUNITIES AND LOCALLY SOURCED TWO ROW MALTED BARLEY, ALBERTA WHEAT AND LAVENDER.  A SPECIAL THANKS TO ATB AGRICULTURE FOR THEIR ONGOING SUPPORT IN BRINGING THE RURAL EXPERIENCE TO OUR CITY.  WE TRULY HOPE YOU ENJOY THIS COMMUNITY INVOLVED ALE MADE BETTER TOGETHER.

Ivo hopsmaster

Our Hopmaster, Ivo Olivetti, has weeded and watered our little group of plants all summer, coaching them to clamber up the south rink screen to an amazing height. We invited you to cheer on our hop plantings in the next year as you visit and enjoy our garden spaces.  Thanks to Ivo for his patient work with our plants.

This was a small run of ale so you may not find any left in the stores but many of our neighborhood folks have enjoyed it this fall – and we look forward to next year’s brew.
