The 16 Avenue and 29 Street intersection in northwest Calgary will be undergoing construction beginning in late summer 2016 to improve traffic flow at one of the city’s busiest intersections.
The Stadium Development Area Redevelopment Plan approved by Council outlined necessary upgrades to the intersection of 16 Avenue and Uxbridge Drive (29 Street) N.W. to accommodate future developments in the area including:
- Stadium Shopping Centre
- Calgary Cancer Centre
- West Campus
- Foothills Professional and Medical Centre
The intersection upgrades will improve traffic flow, reduce congestion, and provide better access to key destinations for all modes of transportation. The intersection will include constructing a roundabout at Uxbridge Drive and Ulster Road N.W.
There are a number of projects in this area so The City is coordinating with stakeholders to minimize the disruptions to area residents and reduce the number of times the intersection would require lane closures to complete the necessary work.
16 Avenue and 29 Street frequently asked questions
What work is being done?
The City will be widening 16 Avenue to six lanes where it intersects with 29 Street N.W. to the south, and Uxbridge Drive to the north to improve traffic flow at the intersection. Along with this work, a roundabout will be built at Uxbridge Drive and Ulster Road N.W. to further improve traffic flow at one of the city’s busiest intersections.
Why is the work being done?
Increased road capacity along 16 Avenue and 29 Street will provide businesses, residents and commuters through the area better access to key destinations such as Foothills Hospital, Foothills Professional Centre, the Stadium Shopping Centre and other amenities.
Widening 16 Avenue to six lanes creates space for transit stops to be built for the North Crosstown Bus Rapid Transit project and provides better traffic flow for commuters.
When will construction on the intersection start?
Work on the 16 Avenue and 29 Street intersection will start in the early summer of 2016 and will be complete in the summer of 2017. For 2016, the majority of the work includes a water main upgrade across 16 Avenue and underground utility work for both this project, and other developments in the area. By coordinating work with other developments in the area, The City will minimize disruption for residents and commuters and reduce the number of times where the intersection will be affected.
What will be the impacts during construction? Because The City is coordinating this intersection upgrade the underground utility work and road construction will be done once to minimize the disruption to residents. During construction, traffic flow will be maintained at the intersection to ensure access to the Foothills Medical Centre. If road closures are required, they will occur at night and not during rush hour times.
